The VW Golf family will welcome another member when the 2017 Golf Alltrack goes on sale later this year. The Alltrack model will come only with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive, which means every trim will have some serious off-roading capabilities. The Alltrack is shaping up to be an appealing alternative for those family-vehicle shoppers who want to ditch the crossover craze but still want a little insurance when they head off the pavement.
2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack Capabilities
This five-passenger hatchback is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled inline-4-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. Drivers will eventually have their choice between a six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission or a six-speed manual.
Obviously, the crucial element of the Alltrack’s construction is the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. To provide optimal fuel efficiency, the Golf Alltrack will function as a front-wheel-drive vehicle until wheel slippage is sensed, and then, up to 50 percent of the drive torque can be transferred to the rear wheels. The Golf Alltrack’s electronic differential locks, in combination with the electronic stability system, can also brake a wheel when it is slipping to ensure constant transfer of drive power to the wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle.
